Eccentric Minds

Category
Novel

At the southern end of the Riverina, the Albury College educates the sons of the region’s vast sheep stations. In the heat of late summer 1955 Ralph Wellington arrives at the private boarding school to atone for the evil in his family’s past, the murder of King Henry on Barrakee Station.

In an unlikely disguise he takes up his duties as the English master, and becomes obsessed with Rose Marie Marshall, the school secretary. So does Cora Benson, the new Music teacher, who also has a secret past.

Indeed most of the college staff have mysterious backgrounds and by the end of the school year the past will have caught up with a number of them and driven them to madness or destruction.

Or perhaps they haven’t been undone by their individual histories, but by the nature of their country, whose vast dry spaces have opened up the cracks in their minds.

Eccentric Minds is a homage to the detective fiction of Arthur Upfield.
